The four shapes of Dal (د)
Arabic letters change shape depending on where they sit in a word. The same sheet your child traces shows all four, so the changing shape is learned from day one instead of coming as a surprise later.
How to pronounce Dal
“dāl”. Touch the tip of your tongue to the ridge behind your top front teeth, then release it with your voice buzzing — like the 'd' in 'dog'. It is the voiced partner of 'ta': same tongue position, but the voice is switched on.
Like English 'd' but more dental — the tongue rests right against the teeth, not pulled back. Don't confuse it with the heavy emphatic ض; د is light and forward, ض fills the whole mouth.
The classic mix-up: Forgetting to voice it, so 'dubb' slips toward 'tubb'. Have your child place a hand on the throat and feel the buzz on 'd' that disappears on 't' — voicing is the whole difference.
Words your child already knows with Dal
These are the example words printed on the worksheet — trace them together, then find more around the house.
One activity for this week
Act out a bear (dubb) waking from hibernation while saying 'd-d-dubb' with a deep voice. The deep growl naturally engages the voicing that distinguishes د from ت.
